It’s a boy! Shortly after you hear these words, chances are you and your spouse will begin to question whether you wish to have your child circumcised. Circumcision helps to keep your child’s penis cleaner, particularly as they get older. This is because it removes the foreskin that covers the head of the penis, where fluids and sweat can build up and cause fungal infections and decay. It’s a common surgical procedure performed here in the United States.

At Peekaboo Pediatrics, we perform neonatal circumcision at MHNW Hospital. We typically perform this procedure within a couple days of being born. However, if your baby is born prematurely or is not well enough to undergo the procedure during his hospital stay, we can perform it later.

While it sounds scary, circumcision is a quick procedure. During the procedure, your baby will be awake. However, he’ll be given a tiny bit of sugar water to ease the pain. This mixture is quite powerful to a newborn. Oftentimes, we’ll let parents give the baby sugar water by dipping their fingers in it and letting him suck on them.

Once the baby is “anesthetized,” the doctor will apply a clamp to the foreskin and snip it off. Afterwards, she will clean the area and wrap it in gauze. All in all, you can expect the procedure to take 10-15 minutes.

The circumcision site should take anywhere from a week to ten days to heal. During that time, you’ll want to make sure the area is kept clean and that any dirty diapers are kept clean. Avoid any feces and make sure it is cleaned well during every diaper change.
